Flat Earth Kids

Do you love those you cosmologically disagree with?

Post by

Have you been in a situation where you received awful medical news, you feel let down and left in a state of mental discomfort and anxiety. The doctor tells you the facts and the points of the problem, answers your questions directly and sends you on your way; next patient please. Now you know the truth about your problem, without compassion.

However a friend meets up with you and listens with a loyal ear and helps with a caring hand. They stand with you, as you adjust, regaining strength and healing. Some have the doctor’s news without a compassionate friend. Can we also be similar when we speak about biblical cosmology?

Knowledge meets Love

Romans 14:15 jumped out to me.

”Yet if your brother is grieved because of [your] food, you are no longer walking in love. Do not destroy with your food the one for whom Christ died.”

How do we walk in love, despite disagreement with a fellow believer?

What love can we show to each other, through revelation of the flat, stationary earth truth? We shouldn’t fool ourselves, believing they will abandon a lifetime of indoctrination to agree with your study immediately. However, 1 Corinthians 13:2 gives us a deeper understanding of this.

“And though I have [the gift of] prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.”

Without love, knowledge is pointless. You are nothing without love, worthless, the bible explains. A tough truth to grapple with, but we must understand…

  • The love spoken of here is agapē: explained as affection, benevolence, good will, brotherly love.
  • The knowledge in this verse means gnōsis: explained as knowing how to act, know about something, a science (means “to know”).

Do you muddy the waters?

The purpose of knowledge of biblical cosmology and the freedom the word of God brings to us is to agapē God and others more. Think about what Jesus said to the Jews after he had healed a man on the Sabbath in John 5. They sought to kill him because of legalism (excessive adherence to law or formula); he healed on the sabbath, legalism brought their hearts to murder.

Though outrageous adherence to the law, they had no love, hence their desire to murder Jesus. Our Lord Jesus plainly said to the Jews in verse 42 “But I know you, that you do not have the love of God in you”. They had knowledge but no love!

The issue comes when we ridicule and judge others with scorn, because we know and they do not. Instead of letting love flow, we muddy the waters with derision and worthlessness for our fellow believers who disagree. Perhaps this would be a good moment to allow the fruit of long suffering to manifest through you. Surely there’s great value observing the chains of Satan’s deceit removed from a brother or sister? Let’s reflect on Psalm 1:1-2

“Blessed [is] the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight [is] in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night.”

Though rejection, we love

I understand rejection and dismissal. Church family disregards you as an idiot or worse, avoiding you and questioning the sincerity of your faith. It happened to me, but as I grew in the understanding of scripture, the Holy Spirit showed me indefinitely that it’s all about the love of God which illuminates His glory.

Though others ridicule me from within the faith, I will not return the favour. There is a deeper calling here, not to present knowledge and bash the other side. We must display the heart of Christ; to see people set free from the lies and deception of sin and Satan (1 John 3:8).

The Holy Scriptures have told us the truth about the cosmos, when we believed Heliocentrism, like a doctor diagnosing us. Our church siblings are shrouded, needing the same understanding to free their minds towards God’s cosmological truth. But, we must be the agents of God’s love towards them as we explain and teach the Flat Earth truth to them, even when they disagree.

Peace by God’s Word

It’s for us to speak the truth in love Ephesians 4:15 “But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, [even] Christ:”, stand in the truth steadfastly 1 Corinthians 15:58 “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.” and let God bring the increase through His truth we share, 1 Corinthians 3:6 “I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase.”

To conclude, let us pursue what brings peace and the building of each other, Rom 14:19 “Therefore let us pursue the things [which make] for peace and the things by which one may edify another.”
