Our Response to Kent Hovind: Things Are Turned Around

A Brotherly Challenge: Responding to Kent Hovind

I recently watched a short video clip where Kent Hovind, a well-known figure in creationism, stated that he refuses to entertain discussions on a flat earth.

His comments struck me—not because they were harsh or personal, but because they relied on pseudo-scientific assumptions to dismiss clear and repeated biblical descriptions of the earth. His reference to “idioms and expressions” seems to serve as a convenient way to brush aside what the Word of God states in detail. All be it that it is a short clip, I can see he has no desire to change his mind on the matter.

Let me be clear: I have no personal issue with Kent Hovind. I don’t know him and have no ill words toward him. My concern is not about personality, but principle. I offer not an attack, but a biblical challenge to his assumptions.

Not A Scientific Argument — A Spiritual One

Rather than delve into debates about geology or astrophysics, I want to refocus on the spiritual foundation of truth. There’s certainly much that can be said about the flat, fixed, and enclosed cosmology described in Scripture. But what really arrested my heart was a piercing question from the prophet Isaiah:

“Surely you have things turned around! Shall the potter be esteemed as the clay; For shall the thing made say of him who made it, ‘He did not make me’? Or shall the thing formed say of him who formed it, ‘He has no understanding’?” Isaiah 29:16

Have we really begun telling the Creator what His creation is? Have we become so confident in the wisdom of man that we now correct the revealed Word of God?

Can the Clay Instruct the Potter?

As a logo designer myself, my designs don’t tell me why I made them or what they represent. They don’t correct me. They are my creation. In the same way, God is the Designer, and we are His work. The order is clear: He knows. We don’t. “Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; His understanding is infinite.” Psalm 147:5.

Yet many today would rather exchange God’s infinite understanding for man’s temporary theories. Some even reframe Scripture through the lens of science, rather than judging science through the lens of Scripture.

The Fear of the Lord Is the Beginning

Let us return to the foundation. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” Proverbs 1:7

God has not been silent about His creation. The Lord told us the earth is fixed, set on foundations, immovable. God told us the heavens declare His glory and that the firmament is His handiwork. Yahweh has placed us in this ordered world with purpose, position, and protection. “For the Lord gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge and understanding.” Proverbs 2:6

If this is true (and it is), then rejecting God’s Word in favour of heliocentric mythology is a dangerous trade. Why should we doubt Him? Why substitute the truth of God for the opinions of fallible men?

What Are We So Afraid Of?

This is not a moment to bash fellow believers or mock those who have not yet come to this understanding. This is a plea to submit fully to the authority of the Word. I would say to my brother in the Lord:

Why do you resist the understanding of the Lord?

Why push against the goads?

What are you afraid of?

We cannot claim to stand for biblical creation while denying the biblical earth.

With all due love and respect, I reject the myth of the spinning globe and embrace the full truth of Scripture—that the earth is fixed, founded, and unmovable, as the Bible declares. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding.” Proverbs 3:5

Like Our Saviour, Let Us Say: “It Is Written”

Our Saviour, when facing Satan, did not speak based on reasoning, philosophy, or science. He said, “It is written.” If the perfect Son of God submitted to the authority of Scripture, how much more should we?

Let’s not be ashamed to trust the plain reading of the Word. Let’s enjoy the freedom of walking in God’s sanctifying truth, even if it costs us the world’s approval. “Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.” John 17:17

Final Thoughts: Trust and Obey

In a world where deception runs deep and compromise is common, may we stand firm—flat and unmoving—on the solid foundation of God’s Word. Let us trust and obey, for only God understands.

“…Surely you have things turned around!…” Isaiah 29:16 (repeated)

Yes, we do.

Let’s turn back.
