Are we training our kids?
I want to start today’s post with the encouragement that God’s grace and mercy are unceasing. This is not about condemnation, but about bringing encouragement and challenge to us as parents as we navigate a secular environment.
If you do not homeschool, God is greater and can extend his grace towards your family life and structure. Sometimes the way we have built our lives does not lend to us being able to teach our children at home. I understand, but I also challenge. Can we make adjustments to homeschool?
With over 10 years of homeschooling experience, I’ve observed remarkable benefits and breakthroughs. There is tremendous sacrifice also, but what of true value is without cost?
Systems around us
I’ve seen the school system in my country and others plummet regarding Christian morality and conduct. Our children are being indoctrinated by secularism and godlessness. We plant into the minds and hearts of our young ones and this system we are called to trust, uproot much of the hard and diligent work we invest in drawing our children closer to Jesus.
I believe God is greater and can use children from families who go through the system. We see it throughout scripture, from Joseph to Apostle Paul, but we can forget the Prophet Samuel or Timothy. So if you can teach your children full/part time, it is a worthwhile venture that will give the best ground. To build and lay the correct foundations for God to use.
Training our children up
I remind myself to (Proverbs 20:6) train your child up. By the law of practice, the more time and opportunity you have to train someone, the stronger they will become. Utilize after-school and homeschooling time to train your child. Train them up in God.
Where can you make changes? To create space for training for your kids?
*Excerpt from Facebook post by Nicki Truesdell*
“Homeschooling doesn’t insulate your child from the world. It won’t make your kids nicer, or more responsible, or smarter. It won’t make them better Christians, or Christians at all. But what homeschooling gives you is TIME to parent. With your children under your influence (instead of the state and their peers), time is a blessing. Time for manners. Time for responsibility training. Time to talk. Time for deep Bible study. Time for quality academics.
Time with you.
You have been given a very short window of time to raise your sons and daughters to adulthood. But that window of time can be stretched when they are home with you.
Make the most of childhood by being there. Be the primary influence on your children. Talk to them, disciple them, and be a wall between them and the world.
Homeschooling is more about HOME than SCHOOL.”
I don’t know Nikki’s personal beliefs regarding the correct shape of the world and biblical cosmology, but I see wisdom in her post regarding schooling your children at home.
The scripture speaks clearly in Deuteronomy 6:4-9 –
“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be in your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.” (Deuteronomy 6:4-9)
How will you seize the opportunity?
